The new immigration policy unleashes the protests of businessmen and the Labor opposition.

The rejection of the immigrant was always behind Brexit and the Boris Johnson Government has been quick to confirm it. The Minister of the Interior, Priti Patel, will present on Wednesday the new rule that will regulate access to the UK labor market from January 2021, and her department has already published the basic lines. Unskilled workers and those who are not able to speak English will see the entrance doors closed, in a turn of the migration policy that has irritated the business sector. The cheap and efficient workforce in the hospitality sector and in the manufacturing and construction industries is over.

Downing Street does not abandon the anti-European rhetoric of recent years , and announces the recovery of "full control" of the borders of the United Kingdom and the end of the "distortion" that, according to the official version, caused the free movement of people in the European Union.

The document that establishes the lines of the new immigration policy occupies 10 pages, and represents a revolution. Completely close the borders of the United Kingdom to unskilled workers. It requires knowledge of English as an almost fundamental requirement in order to access the British labor market. And it imposes a previous contract, whose salary must be at least 31,000 euros per year, to work in its territory. The limit is reduced to about 25,000 euros if it is especially needed sectors, such as nursing.

The adventure of many young people, and not so young, Europeans who came to the United Kingdom in search of opportunities, is over.

The publication of the new immigration policy has caused outrage and protests in the Labor opposition and in the business sectors that depend on foreign labor. The British economy has so far nurtured EU staff for positions such as waiters and waitresses, hotel staff, agricultural workers, food processing plant employees or workers in the fishing industry.

"The jobs that the Government considers of 'low qualification' are vital for the growth and stability of companies. This measure threatens the supply of all the personnel we need to offer citizens the services on which they depend", said Tom Hadley, director of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation contracting company.

The most important employer of the United Kingdom, CBI (Confederation of British Industry), has been more prudent in its criticism of the measures announced by the Government, but has warned of the problems they can cause in certain sectors. Its president, Carolyn Fairbairn, has congratulated the extension of the legal limit to the number of high-skill workers who may enter the country, but has warned of "the difficulties that some companies will have to hire the staff they need to remain active."

The Labor spokeswoman of the Labor opposition, Diane Abbott, has pointed out the cynicism that, according to her, contains the Government's announcement. "Most people who come to the United Kingdom today already speak English. Are we really going to veto mathematics geniuses because their level of English is not acceptable? It is an inhuman and harmful measure," he said.

Downing Street wants to present its proposals as a way of forcing companies to invest more in the training of their staff and in their technological development. "It is important that British employers stop relying on the country's immigration policy as an alternative to the need to invest in the retention of their employees, in their productivity, and in further progress in technology and automation," says the Government document .

The Johnson Government contemplates the exception of temporary workers for specific seasons in agricultural harvesting, but falls short of the figures. It establishes a quota of 10,000 temporary workers, well below the 70,000 that the National Farmers Union has claimed for the 2021 season.

HOW MANY POINTS DO YOU NEED TO WORK IN THE UK? Both workers in the European Union and those in other countries will be subject to the new points system presented by the British Government. In total, 70 points or more must be obtained in order to work in the United Kingdom.
