House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan on Tuesday formally referred former CIA Director John Brennan to the Justice Department for criminal prosecution, accusing the Obama-era intelligence chief of lying to Congress about his role in spreading what he called “anti-Trump lies” tied to the now-discredited Steele dossier.

Jordan’s referral, sent to Attorney General Pam Bondi, alleges that Brennan “knowingly and willfully testified falsely” during a May 2023 interview with the Judiciary Committee when he claimed the CIA “was not involved at all” with the Steele dossier — a Democrat-funded collection of false stories used to smear Donald Trump during the 2016 campaign. But a newly declassified House Intelligence Committee report contradicts that testimony, revealing the CIA worked directly with the FBI to circulate information from the dossier and that Brennan personally intervened to keep it in the intelligence community’s 2017 assessment on Russian election interference.
