Yeah, the air traffic control system in the USA has been broken for most of my life. Invention and Technology wrote a big in-depth article on this in the 90s, talking about how JOVIAL was still used in system, detailing how controllers could usually tell you exactly when the system was going to shut down. This is nothing new and anyone claiming that Biden - the idiot he was - failed to do anything about it is just a screeching harpy that wants to pin the blame on the most recent thing.

You had a friend that was looking out for you. It's beyond a nightmare, we're just lucky there's so much space above us, otherwise aircraft would be hitting each other all the time.

Yep. He saved me from heartache and a likely heart attack from stress. He got into the field because his dad was in it.
