A couple of things to remember about the post office:

  • Until the 1970s, USPS was in part funded by the federal government. When it was cut loose, it lost a good portion of it's funding.
  • Only the post office can legally put things in your mailbox. This should be changed - private mail will live or die based on it's costs.
  • The retirement pre-fund ended some years ago, and was pretty much defaulted on during it's entire lifespan.
  • The post office is, by law, not allowed to make a long term profit. It's supposed to be zero-sum, with services paying fully for costs.
  • The laws of the United States give congress the power to establish a postal system, not that they actually need to have one.
  • The post office literally cannot pay for itself because they can't raise prices to actual cost levels.
  • The post office is still hamstrung by the federal government and isn't allowed to adjust it's pricing without approval.
  • Epstein didn't kill himself, and this is something that is still being covered up today. He's most likely still alive somewhere.
  • Letter volume has dropped significantly since the Internet changed personal communication.
  • The post office needs to either be privatized or it's controls need to be loosened so it can operate like it's a private entity.

Very good points raised there, Bird. Especially one of them.

I tried to be comprehensive.

There are places where trains make sense. Texas for one. There should be high speed rail service between the 4 major Texas cities as a minimum

As long as they're truly high speed and not the shite they keep trying here in Ohio.

If these were private entities they would be more cost effective. Just because they’re beloved doesn’t mean we should keep throwing cash at them. I get so much junk mail in my email accounts that I have important things like bills mailed, where there is less junk mail. But if the USPS went away, I’d adjust.

I’d enjoy Amtrak, but it isn’t as convenient as driving and more expensive than flying, so until it becomes more convenient or less expensive, I have no real need for it.
