She did just have a hip replacement, docs recommend using a walker for a couple of weeks until things heal up a bit. She may not need it to walk, it's more of a precaution to prevent her from falling again while she heals.

A 65 year old friend of mine had his hip replaced last year and the doc wanted him to use the walker for the first 2-3 weeks of recovery though my friend felt he didn't need it ... and there were exercises to make sure he had the best recovery. I'm sure it's SOP for hip replacements. Nancy's only other option would be a wheel chair (that would make her look "weaker" than using a walker).
It's looking like a geriatric ward.
