According to MSNBC, at least 5 Senate Republicans were a hard no on Gaetz:

Mitch McConnell (R-KY) Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) Susan Collins (R-ME) Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) Sen.-elect John Curtis (R-UT)

I haven't decided whether I think he'd be more effective in the House or Senate. I suppose he could establish a "Senate Freedom Caucus". Taking Rubio's seat in the SSCI would be big. He could show the senate some tenacious backbone. A 6 year term vs a 2 year term is another benefit.

Either way, he's a wrecking ball that's needed in DC!

He's already allegedly resigned from the House, so I'm not sure if he'd be able to run for his old seat

He resigned from the current Congress session, and can not return to it. He was already re-elected to the House in this 2024 election. The new 119th(?) Congress gets sworn-in in January 2025, Gaetz can join the new Congress at that time in the new session - he did not resign from a congress that does not yet exist. Or he can be appointed Senator by Desantis. Or Trump might have a different position in mind to appoint him to. So many options!

That's possible, no idea how that works though.
