So you can have an attorney or you can defend yourself, but not both, unless the court consents.

Time constraints, speech constraints, etc. I kind of get it, but I still think it's a bunch of shit.

You should be able to have as much time as you need and say what you want to say.

Wouldn't doubt the judge did it on purpose knowing they wouldn't agree to it.

Basically, he's not entitled to speak in this trial. Judge allows it but wants him to formally agree to the normal legal constraints that everyone has to adhere to for this. He won't, so the judge denied him.

Does not sound bad when you see it laid out. I'm surprised how Trump lawyer doesn't use punctuation in an email to a judge! Not a good look
