If the fence around my house is broken, and all I do is say it's been broken for 30 years so it's not my fault, that's not an excuse. If I told everyone in the house last year that I'd take the job to maintain and fix the fence, then the broken fence is my responsibility to fix and also it's my fault it's still broken.
