It is questionable if he was even aware. Trump is a wealthy man in NYC. Many people see he has money and will attempt to bring nuisance suits to try and get paid. Trump hired Cohen to intercept and "handle" those suits. Cohen's job was to deal with people dishonest people, so his success in the organization was not by being a nice guy. When Stormy Daniels comes along, Cohen sees a chance to double dip. Represent Trump and pay Daniels frivolous suit to go away and at the same time represent Daniels and take a cut. He claims to pay Stormy and files for reimbursement from the Trump organization which they paid. Cohen then embezzles Stormy's settlement, gets caught and goes to jail. Trump finds out and sues Stormy for defamation and wins. He gets his stolen money ($300k) back from Stormy who unfortunately never saw the money stolen by Cohen. The partisan DOJ is trying to call it a "campaign finance violation" when in reality, the funds never left the Trump organization. Trump is a victim of a fraud perpetrated by Cohen and Daniels and the DOJ is trying to make him the criminal. The DOJ is completely politicized against conservatives.
