If TPTB decides to arrange to put Mcarthy in as a pressure relief valve for two years to take some of the pressure off of the democrats, give the proles the illusion of some kind of "victory", and give them some breathing space to reset, recock, and come back at us in 2024, then that is exactly what will happen.

Hence using the laws and the system already in place to put a nice controllable chair-warmer in. No election. No "choosing". Mcarthy is perfect for them. He's a "republican". He's already bought and paid for. And he's already the speaker, which puts him 3rd in line of succession. The process of installing him would run on greased rails.
