It's easier to corrupt one central area (Washington DC) than 50 regional centers, and it's easier for the people to take back their power when they only have to march to their regional capital rather than cross a continent to get there. This is why the founders wanted a Federal system, which our current government wears only as a skin suit, similar to the "Democratic People's Republic of ___" naming conventions of all the communist countries.
