Actually, it was a perfect combination of stupidity that got Whitmer elected. The previous governor (a republican) was leaving office after the Flint Water debacle. The Dems nominated Whitmer while the Republicans nominated the Michigan version of Hillary Clinton. There was no way the Republican nominee was going to win. However, the situation was made worse because on the same ballot was the petition to legalize Weed in the State. So it got all the stoners to go out and vote which created the trifecta of the Dems getting the Governor, Secretary of State, and Attorney General. None of which should ever have been allowed to get to those offices.
