I don't think it's that close at all. I don't see Texas being engulf by Mexico. At all.

Also it depends if it's a military break up, secessions, or a plan separation.

A plan separation would be the best as it would give time for people to move and assemble with their creed which would give some nice, cohesive, and stable countries. You'd end up with more than 4.

If it's a secession, it will be a Texas/Great Plain Union, West of the Rockies, the Black South, Florida (maybe with Texas), the USA, and a few Native Countries. Canada might split as well.

If it's violent, it won't conform to state line as they are mostly arbitrary and indefensible.
