That won't work for the same reason communism won't work ... human nature. You cannot create a concentration of power without attracting malevolent actors. The problem with malevolent actors is they're not like movie villains. They don't laugh and announce they're here to rule the world and have you slaving for them. They arrive by exploiting the public's emotions using whatever topics are effective. Everyone claims to be the good guys and alleges that the other guys are the evil people who are going to destroy the system. Who decides what's really true? The public? That's how we got where we are. Sounds nice on paper.
