Full stop. These people are real, actual, NPCs. In old-school philosophical terms, they really are existing philosophical zombies. That's what's so crazy about it all.
They are literally programmed from birth to run these scripts, and like any script, they can contain errors. One error is their projection. Being used as a bot can sometimes have them spouting things that they do as well.
Projection happens because of simulation. In order to predict the behavior of others we simulate it on our own mind. This works pretty well for the most part since human brains are very similar. Projection happens when the biases of the one doing the simulation creep in. It is not possible to do the simulation without also projecting.
