The House delivered the articles of impeachment to the Senate after Trump had already left office.
The process was started while he was there. Do you not understand the bad precedent this would create? Just do the bad shit 5 minutes before leaving office, and you're scott free.
I completely understand the process and the potential precedent. A President who violates the law then skips out of office can always be tried in criminal court. The process of impeachment is designed to remove someone from and disqualify them from holding office in the future. "Remove and disqualify" are considered one punishment, not two.
