Massive companies running the government (Crony Corporatism) only came to be once corporations were allowed to be "people", which meant that they no longer had to serve the common interest. Thanks, Jews. Still, at least during the early days of Crony Corporatism, the corporations bailed out the US government. From a mess that they themselves had created deliberately, of course, but it was at least slightly more respectable than the current system of the US government bailing out corporations time and time again.
