A 5-ton central A/C takes about half that to run. Unless you're trying to use your mig welder in the air-conditioning I don't know how 10 kW is possible in a "small home."

It's easy to get that high when nothing is gas. If I truly wanted off grid, I'd want a minimum 10kw continuous. By the time you have chest freezers, refrigerator, oven, misc appliances you're over. That's me but everyone's mileage varies. 5k continuous is great but not enough for me to tell the power company go pound dirt.
