This will never be more than a 2 party system and I will never understand why people even think that's a good idea...
First off. It doesn't matter. The election process is a proven farce: your vote does not matter. Understand that first. Cook up your neo-libertarian party and watch how none are never elected, you know, kind of like the Greens, or the Libertarians. USA has several alternative political parties: none are popular enough to make a shit, and even if they were, read above about your vote not mattering and they will put whomever they chose to whichever position they want, this is now proven fact.
Second. Think about what you are really asking for. Study some European political parties/systems. Let's say we go from 2 parties to 4 parties, we'll call them party A-D. All 4 parties are damn near equal in popularity. Party D wins the presidential election with a simple majority. That means 74% of the country is now pissed and feel unrepresented. 100% of the population is now represented by the wishes of 26%. How on Earth do you feel that scenario is either good or sustainable? Be like Europe? Where you get 3 shades of Marxism with one controlled opposition of Marxism Lite?
2 party system ensures at best only half the population is pissed, not a vast majority. And up until a decade or two ago we thought we had a choice between Liberalism and Conservatism, and the two alternated power in a fairly regular frequency; each side got a turn to steer the ship.
Man,the USA I grew up in, those were the days. They're gone now of course, but at least I can say I was alive during the time of USA supremacy, before we let communists (of all fucking people, wtf are they teaching kids in school these days? Being called a communist used to be a great insult) defeat us just the way they told us they would.
