I was initially tempted to by sarcastic and say something like, "gradually."
While that is indeed the case, it can be better stated that Americans have been slowly conditioned to accept that their "betters" know what's good for them and all too many are willing to meekly go along.

I was thinking about that on the ride home as I passed a high school. The schools and colleges play no small part in that. They teach you to be obedient and structured, the system creates citizens that are easily managed.
