The libertarian position on open borders was once tied to the complete lack of a social safety net. If you eliminate the incentive for people to come and mooch off of the system you'd get people who wanted to come here and work hard. Or so the theory goes,

There is a lot of other stuff that goes into open borders too. Different countries have different regulations for business. Then there are tariffs. It seems like the current open border people are just,, meh... we need to do it! Don't think about all that.

I'm not advocating open borders. I think we need to lock them down AND cut off the incentives for them to come here.
