There's something I've heard and that I agree with. Since the rise of social media, when the left compare themselves to others, they're not just thinking about themselves as Americans, they're measuring their politics in the context of the groups they interact with on the Net. So they call themselves moderates because in Europe they would be, and they view conservative views with the same disgust they would be viewed in the more socialistic regions of the world.
