Images from the scene in Boonville in upstate New York showed the Abundant Life Fellowship Church engulfed in flames.
The explosion occurred at 10:23am local time Tuesday. Authorities have not yet provided a cause of the explosion, however the church said in a statement to Facebook that it was an 'obvious gas leak.'
The church said that its pastor Brandon Pitts and another congregation member were present at the time, and the two of them 'and a few other responders were in the building at the time of the explosion.'
