The current state of the union is that of an abusive marriage on the rocks. The Pollyanna Party of the first part is delusionally engaged in the extrajudicial fantasy that counseling (née voting) or empathy (née legislating) will save it. The Pragmatic Party of the second part recognizes the philosophical and practical impasse and therefore that the breakup is inevitable. The longer it is delayed, the greater the incurred damage. What form the arbitration and mediation the dissolution takes is the interesting part of this equation.
