Carbon monoxide can cause nausea and confusion. Usually people against the death penalty point to any discomfort as a reason for it's removal. Death by nitrogen asphyxiation has no visible symptoms.

It would cost more just getting them to the volcano than pumping nitrogen into a mask worn by the inmate in a sealed chamber with a wooden door.

Hanging is one of those execution methods where it's like... "merciful" but also brutal.

When done correctly (meaning taking into account the condemned man's weight and length of rope for the drop), I'd imagine the jarring of falling is quite painful... but then the painful part is over. Now it's the suffocation while neck is injured or broken, you'll pass out in a few seconds. Then, after a few minutes, they're gone.

Very little mess, no use of valuable stuff like ammunition or kindling, just graphic enough to display as a warning to others, but not so graphic that we fall to the level of vicious, barbaric savages who flay people alive and shit like that.

But seriously, how hard is it to overdose someone on morphine or fentanyl? People do it by accident all the fucking time, and these assholes can't kill a prisoner who is presumably opiate naive?
