It's unsecured debt. All they can do is send you nasty letters, constantly call and harass you and your family/friends/workplace.

My boss told me recently that he's several months behind in his mortgage and credit card payments.

I didn't have the heart to tell him my debt-free ass used my recent paycheck to purchase more gold. ($70 premium over spot.)

That's part of the reason, for sure. Also, his wife has been on maternity leave, so a portion of their household income has been missing. I suspect that when the Mrs. goes back to work things will get back on track.
