Early on, I had very carefully analyzed the internal terrain of my home with an eye towards home defense. I finally settled on a strategy that involved establishing a defensive position at the doorway of the master bedroom, which would give me a linear killzone down the main hall and effective control over the center of the house and direct observation of all of the kid's bedroom doors. All they had to do was lock their door, sit tight and wait for dad. But the best part was that the large stone fireplace in the living room was perfectly positioned to serve as a backstop for any wayward #1 buckshot pellets. Minimizing collateral damage. Which was nice.
BTW, tile is nice in this regard because you can always keep some spare replacement tiles out in the garage for incidental repairs.
Over the course of a lot of my own analysis, I settled on #1 as compromise between 00 and #4 for pellet count/pattern density, and energy per pellet. I found #4 to lack sufficient soft tissue penetration. 00 has too much for household applications. #1 seems to be the sweet spot.
The loads I make consistently penetrate about 12", through denim, at 10 yards, in test gel.
