Over the course of a lot of my own analysis, I settled on #1 as compromise between 00 and #4 for pellet count/pattern density, and energy per pellet. I found #4 to lack sufficient soft tissue penetration. 00 has too much for household applications. #1 seems to be the sweet spot.
The loads I make consistently penetrate about 12", through denim, at 10 yards, in test gel.
