Just read this part in the Freight Waves source from the article:

“That is our goal, to have owner-operators hired as drivers,” Bloch said. “Our goal is for the shipping industry to take responsibility for these drivers.” If the workers are converted to employees, he said, it will be easier for them to be paid an amount that reflect at least the minimum wage...

Fucking what? You're goal is to force small independent companies to work for the larger mega carriers? How can you possibly start a new trucking company then? Wouldn't this make it impossible to grow one organically? Basically your only way to go into transportation is if you already have millions to buy a fleet?

Also note how they said "workers" instead of "business owners." This is exactly what I'm talking about.

While we're at it, we should probably take a hard look at local diners. They shouldn't be operating independently and the restaurant industry should take responsibility for these chefs. They can go work for waffle house or McDonald's.

Lastly, I'd bet my paycheck this has more to do with mega carrier lobbyists than it does unions. O/O's are roughly 10% of the market but it's 10% the mega carriers see as untapped so they are always trying to force them out of business. Just look at all of the talk about governing all trucks to 65 mph. They say it's about safety but the reality is, it's just mega carriers bringing O/O's down to their level.
