Gunshots are loud up close but the sound doesn't travel as far as you might think. You probably wouldn't hear your next door neighbor shoot himself if you're both in single family houses.

Ever stand outside an indoor shooting range? School walls are built pretty similarly where I come from. I stand by that people inside a classroom probably couldn't hear someone shooting out in the lawn

All the indoor ranges I go to have thick walls and sound proofing. Nothing like any school ive seen. Also It doesnt stop the gun sounds 100% more like 70%.
