It is an odd trend that young people no longer have much desire to be independent.
Not the problem. The problem is the cost of entry to independence is so high it's not worth it. I used to blame them but I don't naymore after I thought about it. College for instance. Your entire in school (9 mo / 12) time could be paid for with a summer job and this included tuition + rent. Your fun was then added with a weekend job.

No, but it makes life easier and offers financial benefits. Having a credit card does not have to equal having credit card debt.
