I think this is an indictment of law enforcement as much as Hertz. Some of the stories are pretty crazy. According to Hertz, their system automatically notifies police when a vehicle is overdue. This system then doesn't cancel the notification when the car is turned back in. I think most of these cases should have been rejected by law enforcement and handled as a civil matter.

If I were to loan something to a friend, and he then stopped all communication and wouldn't return the thing I loaned, and if I were to then call police on him for theft, the police would tell me it's a civil matter and that they won't get involved. It's a contract dispute. Then why are the cops showing deference to a corporation that's doing the same?

Exactly. Hertz and the law enforcement agencies that did the crap both need to be punished severely.

For whatever reason cops tend to be on the side of businessess and corporations over individual citizens.
