I made another comment with a comment thread stupid people everywhere luckily most have a brain.
We have emission testing since were so close to Portland. The car manufacturers made a deal and your first sticker is good for 5 years then you test. But at 5 years state law states the manufacturer is no longer responsible for emission repairs even if your warranty is still in effect.
Basically you could buy a new car that could never pass emissions and after 5 years you’ll have to spend thousands replacing something that should’ve never been sold.
If it’s diesel trucks or a popular car you can buy a reprogrammable chip and when it’s emissions time you put it back to default.
The market is going to be huge for those if it every takes off. They have six years, then an additional 3 then they can let congress know it can’t be done safely, which will never happen unless people start protesting it now.

Planned obsolescence. Five years is the lifespan auto makers shoot for due to the common length of time of an auto loan. It's super kosher.
