Unless i read it wrong, they're offering a SERVICE that requires infrastructure which Toyota maintains on a free-trial basis. Once that free trail ends, you can continue using the service for a fee if you choose to. If you don't want the remote start capability, and choose to simply use the fob as it has been used for the last 25 years, that's also your choice.
WTF is everyone so pissed about? You can still use your key like you've always done, or you can pay to use the service offered by Toyota.
If their remote start feature requires servers in the cloud rather than being standalone then it's shit design anyway.
tesla already had an issue with this , it ended up locking people from using their cars
It depends on the design. If it's like On Star that requires servers so that it can be started from anywhere, that's one thing. If it's a radio connection that is a direct connection between the car and the fob, that's another. However, if that's the case, there shouldn't be any way for Toyota to change the software to include the charge model.
True, but then the question is why you'd want to start your car engine if you aren't anywhere near your car. Engineers preoccupied with what they could vs should do, etc.
Because prior you didn't need to. Any old remote start including the one on my new truck's key fob will run forever, no fee required.
I could be understanding the design incorrectly, but i'm envisioning something like On Star, not a radio connection.
That's silly anyways. I can start my truck from my phone too. Haven't done it once.
Because you don't just install a remote starter on every car then charge people just to use what they already have purchased. The fact that they use "servers" to perform this function is just the workaround excuse they've implemented to rape you in the wallet. They went out of their way to over-engineer a damned remote starter it in such a way to enable this user hostile practice.
Edit: AND ANOTHER THING, DAMNIT!! How many times a year honestly are you going to have to remote start your vehicle when it's out of range of standard radio keyfobs? Maybe two or three times? Probably never? Is it really worth it? Hell no.
