Since I'm a Farmer, I can tell you that right off the top of my head. Mexico had corn, but it was small, not very much to eat. For years and years, the farmers selected the largest ears to replant for next year and so on. A century-plus later, corn as we know it was born.
The University of Nebraska developed, not through DNA modification but natural selection, a huge variety, one that we use today for Ethanol production and feed.
Of course it is more involved than that, but that's a quick overview.

Treatments like his is why they forced the massive human trials with the viral vector vaccines. Once they have the viral vector (an adenovirus delivering DNA to the nucleus) under control, they can then realize their transhumanism dreams. Until now they have just modified genes to cure hereditary diseases (example: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41434-019-0085-4), in the future they will create ideal serfs, knock out aging factors in their own genes, and create some super soldiers.
