The real reason is two fold, one is futures contracts, gas companies see the price going up later, hence they are increasing the prices now. The second is every asshole state (red ones too) increased gas taxes when the gas prices went down, and now that prices are going back up, the prices of the tax stayed, hence the gas prices are shooting up even faster than before
