Hmm with jobs out there aplenty I would quit. Find a hourly pay 40 hour a week guaranteed. Unless you like where you are at. I would keep my area neat and organized. Have your own file system on what you did, and if a customer returns make sure you stand out. That way he requests you over the new guy.
It's good and bad. Probably a little more bad than good. Supposably, if you're a good tech, you can get jobs done faster than the "flat rate time" and therefore make more money. Like if you have five 2-hour jobs lined up, and you finish all the 2-hour jobs in 1 hour, you just made 10 hours worth of money in 5 hours.
It's not always that easy though. With older machines, you get rusted shit. Seized/broken bolts, stupid customer modifications that slow you down, parts that are a bitch to get on/off or whatever. Might take you 3 hours instead of 2 because you have to deal with some bullshit, or have to refer to a service manual if you don't know exactly what you're doing, etc. Still only paid 2 hours.
There is opportunity to make good money, but I am committed to doing a GOOD job, not a FAST job. So this system of pay is bullshit.
Sounds screwy I agree. Invest in pb blaster and extra shiny stuff for yourself. Take it home with you at the end of each day. That way you can get the jobs first.
