He had to. Apple nearly folded, if it did it was a risk of monopoly status and government intervention. He did it to keep the competition alive to prevent that.

Agreed. However, he wanted to keep them on life support, not have them become a major player.

Yup, just alive enough to feign a story to regulators, though by rights they had already passed monopoly status and were in danger of congressional hearings.

Strangely, I played a significant part in that story, though indirectly. I can’t say much for fear of doxxing, but had I not had certain conversations with influential persons, history would have been very different.
