It is true, 3 trains derail a day in the US but most people wouldn't know a derailed train if they saw one, they probably just ask why the train has stopped for no good reason.
Most derails are just a wheel or two jumping the track, nothing catastrophic people freaking out about the number of derails are being manipulated. In nearly 2 weeks we have had 3 significant derail events one was east palestine, another I believe was in texas where some entitled fleet truck driver lost a game of chicken with a train, and just the other day number of cars came off the track in an accident but there was no spillage to my knowledge.
The rails and their workers are in bad shape and PSR is to blame but that derail in south carolina and most of the other ones in the news were just the common form of derail. That 3 a day figure includes derails in rail yards BTW and the news likely wouldn't catch a whiff of those.
