Considering most American live hand-to-mouth the current situation is a huge deal. Especially if you were not a homeowner prior the recent housing cost run up. Rents, gas, food, all up up up.
For those of us with a decent job and most of our shit paid for, it is more of an annoyance than a struggle. To not understand that most Americans don't have it like that, you have to live in a bubble or just be a SMUG asshat. In Krugman's case, he is both.

I feel really bad for kids just starting out. Buying a home, starting a family now must be near impossible to manage.
Add the student loan scam and it is damn near impossible.
Unpopular opinion: Americans don't know what real poverty is (yet). Even our drug-addicted mentally-ill homeless felons are not starving to death. You want to see true poverty, look into the Holodomor.
You think things are bad now? Just wait.
