This is what I was taught when first went to school. Apparently it took them some time to update their curriculum. But hot or cold wasn't the important point, it was that the climate punishes us for being bad.

Yep. That's exactly it.
I was told that New York would be under 70 feet of water and you'd tour it in January while the temperature was 110.
This was in the very early 80s.
This is around the same time I was taught about global cooling.
Yeah, I seem to remember that as well, the UK was going to be a Siberian Wasteland at the same time.
