I actually love Waffle House, it is my favorite chain, and a very uniquely American dining experience.
What really sets them apart as a full service restaurant is the fact that they never close. They all operate 24/7, 365nl days a year, and are well known for not closing, even in the case of minor natural disasters and extremely inclimate weather. Indeed, FEMA uses an informal "Waffle House" index to classify natural disasters; Green for full menu, yellow if they have a limited menu due to loss of power, and red if they are actually closed.
Because Waffle House is open all the time, it means you get a continuous slice of the region's humanity at that time of day. While it is quite pleasant on a Sunday after church hours, going on a Saturday at 3:30 AM after all the bars exemplifies the baseness of the human condition.
And the grits are really good.
Waffles are great, but if it gets crazy only at night, then it's less dangerous than European McD, which generally are also 24/7.
