The reality is that is just food. It doesn't matter who you were -- for the vast majority of history, everyone was eating the same thing. They were eating what was available. You don't even get to things like lobster thermidor until the 19th century -- and remember that lobster was once peasant food, to the point that we had to regulate how often a slavemaster was allowed to force his slaves to eat it.

12th century English kings were eating roast game, boiled eggs, cheese, herb salads, and whole wheat bread. Peasants were eating roast game (less of it, less often), boiled eggs, cheese, herb salads, and whole wheat bread (less finely ground and sieved.) Most of the high level cooking for kings were farces, (the origin of the word farce) where you stuff one animal into another one and then roast them. "Ahh, I thought this was a deer, but look, there's a swan in it!"
