Submarines don't fail like in the movies, where leaks spout and rivets shoot out. As soon as the structural integrity is compromised, they collapse into a crushed version like when a car comes out of the crusher machine.

It all happens in less than one second; hull is breached, water enters at supersonic speed, everyone in the sub is immediately turned into jelly. The US Navy underses Listening system alerted the moment that the sub was crushed. Info about that was correlated with time of "lost communications". All that info was held back by Xiden to deflect from IRS scandals and also to make the USCG look good.
