It's hard to prove a negative but I just saw this posted to ConPro a week or two ago and someone had posted (IIRC) a statement from Gibson's agent that he hadn't said that, and I believe no one could find an article sourcing the quote either.
Still can't be sure what's true. It's the internet after all.

Also various comments on jews (not like this one though, more mild stuff), The Passion of the Christ etc. but I think the tapes were really what they used at the time to cancel him.
