I'm going to find a more subtle way of expressing this to people. There has to be a way to ease this on people less likely to accept it when it's worded this way. I suspect they already instinctively know though, just won't admit it.

Actually, they can't bring themselves to admit it. They know it, but they can't actually say the words out loud. Speaking it makes it real. In their head they know it but saying the words is too hard to overcome.
