just to note most diseases start going away thanks to better hygiene practices and plumbing, so by the time vaccines came around they weren't really needed.

Agreed. But humanity had already developed natural immunity to polio. Of the three strains of polio, the vaccine was ineffective against two and only showed roughly 1-2% against the third. It was a complete farce and had zero net effect. But the medical community claims otherwise - even to this day.
