I don't know if I'd say they exist to protect ______. I think they just exist and destroy whatever they touch. Doesn't matter if the goal supposedly aligns with what they're trying to do, there's always something wrong with it. The left is incapable of collectively doing anything cohesive except destroy, and even that requires a big-money wrangler to keep it loosely together.
