How many acres is that, 2, or so? I'd say you'd want more, about 10 acres, minimum. The bulk of which would be hay fields. Just the hay alone is worth something, more in the off season. Feeds ruminants, goats, horses and cows. Horses are worth some real cash. And a grid down scenario, a horse is worth even more. If you guys read this far... Save up as much as you can. Purchase land that can feed you and you family and get some animals appropriate for the land and what you plant on it. Do not get pigs- they will completely destroy your land.

Agree except for the pigs… I use pigs to till soil, after they are big and harvested the land (from raw) Is all churned up without weeds. Also, they can eat mostly farm scrap that would otherwise become compost, and the fat source is invaluable. In a food scarcity scenario, fats are a major component that is hard to get. Also, delicious. Just smoked 30lbs of bacon, smoking hams and hocks soon.

Used carefully itihink pigs are critical.thta diagram is fro vegetarian only. Doesn’t take into account animals, which you need for fat and protein.

Knew of a farmer that got piglets handed to him. They took over an acre to mud. Kept in a smaller pen I can see what you mean

Location matters a lot too. Yearly rainfall, good soil, etc. That 10 acres would need to be ~30-50 acres in much of Wyoming.

Are cows even doable for a small family without having to get a bunch of machinery and stuff? Like how do you do a lot of the cow-maintenance stuff without some of the heavy equipment I see farmers using.

Definitely, cows where I live are totally done by people with no more than a pair of boots and a machete. Much of them are on ropes and moved daily.

Yep, Watch Justin Rhodes to see how they run animals for their family: chickens, pigs and cows.

I'm only thinking about one or two for milk. Idk much about cows besides they eat a lot of hay.

You would not need more than 1 for milk depending on how much you intend to use. Each cow needs to be milked at least once daily and will produce 6-8 gallons a day.

No matter how much milk you drink and cheese you make you will have more than you can use very quickly unless you are selling/trading or have a very large family.

there are two sides of the road

one side, let's call it the left assume you own nothing and survive day by day by just doing what you are told

the other side, let's called right, assume you can be "self sufficient"

none of the two will work, for obvious reasons

so, the most important thing are the people you have around you, what they want, how they think (logical/emotional/can follow instructions...)

then, you try to stay in the middle of the road, maybe going a bit more on the right from time to time
