I think I get a bit about this weak bastard's mentality. His grandfather was a mason, his father was a mason, and so he had everything handed to him growing up. Out of high school, he goes to a great college for basically nothing. He drops out because he's a dumb piece of shit, but his father would be embarrassed if his son doesn't get put into some position of power. He goes to police academy, his mason jarhead teacher gives him a pass. He rises past the experienced officers and now has been a sheriff for a couple years. He wasn't a very religious person, so he kept putting off becoming a freemason. Then, he's about to have a kid of his own. He wants everything for his son. He panics, contacts his goat-raping father and begins the steps to become a member. He's feeling pressure from all sides, including his peers, to join. Nothing this guy said ever even entered his mind. He was a brain-fucked from birth.
